The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) and its Halaal Department (HD-MAM) have formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Islamic Relief Malawi — one of the world's largest Muslim-led humanitarian organisations — in a signing ceremony held on 5th February 2026.
The MOU establishes a framework for coordinated collaboration between the two organisations across a range of humanitarian, development, and community welfare programs. Areas of cooperation include food security, clean water access, education, healthcare, and emergency relief response.
For MAM, the agreement represents an important expansion of its capacity to serve the poorest and most vulnerable Malawians. Islamic Relief Malawi brings with it significant international funding channels, technical expertise, and global partnerships that will complement MAM's deep community roots and nationwide district network.
MAM National Chairman Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad welcomed the agreement as a natural partnership. "We share the same values — compassion, justice, and service to those in need regardless of faith. Together, we can reach more communities and deliver greater impact than either of us can alone," said the Chairman.
The Halaal Department's involvement in the MOU also opens possibilities for joint food security programs, ensuring that food aid distributed through Islamic Relief meets halaal standards — an important consideration for Muslim beneficiaries across all 28 districts of Malawi.
Implementation of the MOU will be overseen by a joint technical committee drawn from both organisations. Community programs under the partnership are expected to begin rolling out in the second quarter of 2026.
