The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) is preparing for fresh elections as the organisation enters a significant moment in its institutional history. A legal challenge to the association's internal election procedures has opened the door for a renewed electoral process — one that community observers say must be conducted with the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and inclusion.
Prominent voices within the Muslim community have welcomed the development as an opportunity for renewal and growth. Community leader Jumbe, reflecting on the upcoming process, drew on the example of early Islamic leadership traditions. "The history of Islam teaches us that leadership is a trust, not a possession," he said, citing Abu Bakr's famous words upon assuming leadership: 'If I do well, help me; if I do wrong, correct me.'
Observers note that the upcoming elections are critical not only for determining MAM's next leadership team, but for re-energising the organisation and strengthening unity within the Muslim Ummah at a pivotal time. MAM's programs in education, healthcare, water, and relief touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of Malawians — and strong, credible leadership is essential to sustaining and growing that impact.
Community members are calling on the electoral committee to ensure that all eligible voters are included in the process, that candidates are given a fair platform, and that results are announced in a manner that the entire community can accept with confidence.
MAM assures all members and stakeholders that the association is committed to conducting the elections in a manner consistent with Islamic principles of shura (consultation) and the organisation's constitution. The association's doors remain open to dialogue, and all concerns will be addressed through proper institutional channels.
"May Allah guide everyone entrusted with this responsibility and grant the Muslim community leadership that will promote unity and bring meaningful progress," said a community elder at a recent gathering in Blantyre.
MAM will communicate the election schedule and procedures to all district structures in due course.
