MAM Shurah Council Re-Elects Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad as Chairman for New Term

The 2021 Shurah Council of the Muslim Association of Malawi has unanimously retained Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad as Chairman for the next term, with Sheikh Yusuf Chibwana elected as Vice Chairperson.

The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) Shurah Council, comprising nearly 40 Islamic scholars and delegates drawn from all districts of Malawi, has convened in Blantyre and unanimously retained Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad as National Chairman of the association.

MAM Secretary General Alhaji Twaibu Lawe confirmed the decision to journalists, explaining that the Shurah Council system — which traces its roots to 1957 and was revised by constitutional amendment in 2017 — provides a structured, consultative mechanism for leadership selection that is consistent with Islamic principles of shura (consultation).

"This system helps to conduct a fair and peaceful election in our body. It started in 1957, was not used for some years, and was later reviewed. It ensures that leadership decisions reflect the collective wisdom of Islamic scholars across all districts," said Secretary General Lawe.

Sheikh Yusuf Chibwana was elected as Vice Chairperson of MAM, bringing additional scholarly depth to the national leadership team.

Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad, who has led MAM since 2011, expressed gratitude for the continued confidence of the Shurah Council and pledged to continue MAM's development agenda with even greater intensity. Under his leadership, MAM has constructed hundreds of mosques, drilled scores of boreholes, built schools, and established international partnerships with donors in Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

The re-election provides continuity and stability for MAM's ongoing programs, including the Nkhata Bay Water Project, the Machinga Islamic Complex, and the organisation's expanded Ramadan Iftar distribution network.
